Widnes Vikings

The early years

The club was formed in 1873, under the name of Farnworth & Appleton. The name Widnes was adopted in 1876. The club adopted the nickname "Chemics" in 1888, after previously being known as the "Chemicals". The club played at a number of grounds before moving to the present site at Lowerhouse Lane in 1895.

Widnes V Whitehaven

In 2007 the Club reached the Grand Final but defeat to Castleford was followed twenty four hours later by the Club going into administration.

Thankfully a successful local businessman Steve O'Connor bought the Club and revolutionised it both and off the pitch with the Stadium being re-named the Stobart Stadium, Halton as part of a five year sponsorship deal.

In 2008 the Club missed out on a Super League licence in controversial circumstances and will play in the rebranded Co-operative Championship for the next three years.
