In a surprisingly short time, Liverpool's Beatles rewrote musical history. In their journey from Skiffle to Psychedelia to solo to supergroups they created dozens of masterpieces that are forever being reinterpreted.
Not surprisingly, Liverpool has become the prime destination of Beatles fans old and new. Top of the list is The Beatles Story on the Albert Dock. It's a museum-cum-visitor attraction that's been informing and entertaining Beatles addicts for nearly 20 years.
The Dock is also the starting point for the Magical Mystery Tour, a bus trip taking in Beatles landmarks such as Lennon and McCartney's childhood homes (now National Trust-run), Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields.
The Cavern Club was where the group first started to make a name for themselves, and now the Mathew Street area has plenty of references in their honour, including the Cavern Pub, a brass John Lennon statue and a themed hotel.
on Mathew Street Well worth a visit!
The original Club didn't survive the building of the underground railway, but most of its building materials and stage live on in the current Cavern that occupies about three-quarters of the original space. There are occasional tribute bands, but most live music there today is just as cutting edge as the Beatles were back then.
If you are a massive Beatle Fan why not go on The National Trust special joint tour of the childhood homes of John Lennon (Mendips) and Paul McCartney (20 Forthlin Road).
